Changi Airport Connector wins multiple awards for unique design

One year since its opening, the Changi Airport Connector has continued to bring new experiences to visitors and the community-at-large. Besides being a breakthrough project linking the airport and the rest of the Eastern Precinct, the 3.5km-long cycling and jogging path is now a hub for outdoor recreation. As visitors reach the end of the path, they can grab a bite at the Hub & Spoke café, which is now more than just a pit-stop for hungry cyclists and joggers, holding morning workout sessions and even weddings!

The versatility and unique design of the project has won several design awards this year that include the SG Mark (Experience Design and Singapore Together Award), MIPIM Award for Best Urban Project, and Golden Pin Design Mark in Spatial Design (Public Space). The SG Mark awards are awarded to projects with innovative designs that enhance community and everyday life, while the MIPIM and Golden Pin awards are international recognitions for outstanding design projects.

The outdoor seating area at Hub & Spoke makes for a cosy and intimate setting for intimate weddings or solemnisation ceremonies.

Over the past year, enhancements have been made to ensure that the connector continues to serve the community well. Greenery and sustainability have remained at the forefront of this refinement process. The flourishing flora that lines the length of the connector has been consistently maintained so visitors enjoy an immersive nature experience. Following Changi Airport’s year-end festive campaign in 2020, 11 dinosaur exhibits were upcycled and repurposed as permanent displays along the connector, adding even more fun and photo-spot elements.

Enhancements have also been added over the year to improve the safety of visitors and cyclists, including blind-spot mirrors around corners, as well as anti-slip coating along paths.

The Changi Airport Connector has been the product of thorough innovation and design thinking, and the awards it has won are testament to that. On its first-year anniversary, Mr Jayson Goh, Managing Director of Airport Operations Management said, "We wanted to create a different Changi Experience with the Changi Airport Connector. More than just a cycling and walking track, the Changi Airport Connector has become a popular recreation spot for family and friends and we hope to continuously innovate and improve the experience for our visitors. We are proud to say that the Connector is now a key destination within the Changi Precinct.”

The community can look forward to a bright and colourful Jurassic Mile yet again this year, perfect for fun photo shots!

Cycling tours around the connector and surrounding Changi Precinct were introduced in September. The three-hour-long tours start off bright and early in East Coast Park, before the guide uncovers the little-known history of unassuming areas like Bedok and Frankel, before riding across the Connector and ending off at Hub & Spoke café.

Fitness enthusiasts can also look forward to the installation of gym pods as well as a dino-themed virtual Sundown Marathon come the end of the year. Registration for the marathon opens 22 October.

With the popularity of the year-end festive light-up along Jurassic Mile last year, the light-up this year-end will be extended to the entire connector and Jurassic Mile.  Coupled with the first dinosaur topiary made of real plants, the connector is a must-visit this festive season. This will form part of the numerous other activities of Changi’s 2021 festive campaign.

And the fun will not stop there. With Changi’s commitment to always innovate and come up with new ideas for the Connector, visitors can continuously look forward to fresh and exciting experiences.
